About this deal

Everyone gets an identity card that gives them a special power, and everything else is deduction and dice.

But you know, not everyone can play the best and sometimes the thing that we can really get excited about here on Meeple Like Us is the extent to which a game is playable. The dice game really underscores this dilemma as you must shoot people when you roll the bullseye results. And importantly it’s a data point from the past that might become important to the future because a deck of cards has memory. In both of those games though there’s at least a degree of confederacy offered by the baddies knowing the identities of at least *some* of the people around them. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the Renegade is included in the game series, as trying to figure out who is the Renegade and who is the Deputy is the best part of the hidden identity element of the game. I’ve found Bang to be surprisingly difficult for some people to get their heads around when it comes to the win conditions, because really they follow a kind of flow-chart rather than anything more intuitive.

I’ve certainly had games in the past where I haven’t used my character’s special ability the entire game because opportunity simply did not present itself. That way you’d still be stuck at the mercy of the dice but you could bend their outcomes in more interesting ways.

It compresses the deduction and action of the original into just 15 minutes or so of exciting play, producing an enjoyable filler game. I rather like the yahtzee mechanic employed here as well, it tends to keep the pace up and the added randomness helps the game feel lighthearted enough that no one can take it too seriously. The biggest problem I have with Bang: The Dice Game is that if I have five or more players ready to throw down for a game, I’m almost certainly going to pick something else. The catch is the only person who identifies himself is the sheriff so nobody knows who anyone is as you have to figure it out as each player takes a turn.

It reminds me slightly of the game 'The Resistance' which features a similar secret role mechanic, although this game is a lot less stressful and probably a lot more fun. Players that can distinguish colours or can close inspect a card with a suitable accessibility aid will likely be able to tell who they are, but there’s going to be a risk of revealing information to the table. The game’s sole advantage over its father is that it is quick, playing to completion in 15 minutes or so. You really don’t want to kill an outlaw as an outlaw, and the Sheriff killing the deputy is pretty much the worst possible decision. As sheriff you still have to bring the outlaws to heel, as outlaws you still have to stop the law and as renegades you still want to be the last alive, only now the Indians want you all dead too! If you take the last arrow token, all players discard their arrow tokens and take one point of damage per arrow token.
