About this deal

Working with a small amount of soil mixture at a time, roll the mixture between your palms until it forms a smooth ball.

The origin of the name cowslip is unclear, but it may derive from the fact that it grows in meadows well manured by cow dung or cow slips. There are many ways to go about making seed bombs and many more reasons outside of guerilla gardening. While you may have success burying them deeper, they’re already in a medium, and don’t’ need to be underneath the soil surface.Only combine seeds with similar qualities or habitat preferences, or plants that are known to grow well together. Once you have formed a ball with most of the seed and soil encases in clay – roll the damp seed bomb in a container of potting soil to coat the surface. This seed bomb kit contains a packet of wool compost, a packet of clay and a packet of seeds, with instructions, providing enough materials for 20 - 30 seed balls.

Learn how to make a seed bomb using air dry clay – because when it comes to bees, every flower counts.

Seal the opening of the clay by pinching it shut, encasing the soil and seed mixture within the clay. Then I remembered that I have a brick of non toxic air dry clay in my craft hoards, so I started looking for recipes using air dry clay.

Ingredients: Clay powder, wool compost (organic and Soil Association approved), seeds (a mix of 22 native wildflowers). You may change this proportion depending on how dense you want plants to grow, but 3:1 is ideal to work in enough seeds. If you have any questions, remember to contact your local environmental organizations and ask for their help. The first time I tried to make a seed bomb, I couldn't find red clay powder so I decided to use the 'school clay' that comes in those big grey blocks. The idea is that the ‘bombs’ can be lobbed over fences to abandoned land or down city gullies and grow into bee-attracting blooms or herbs. It really depends on how large you make them and how much soil/compost you end up using for each one.
