About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to exploring the reading suggestions at the back of the book.

A love letter to books, so many are mentioned and how they might help with various emotional states. All of those things are legitimate realities, but they felt a little more tossed in there than part of the story itself. At various points, I had to take a break from reading it because it brought back memories of lockdown and the sense of claustrophobia, frustration and fear I experienced and that was quite hard to deal with. And I think there is still a lot of guilt around that, and a feeling that I should be grateful, rather than be able to mourn and grieve the difficulties I did face. But it worked very well as a flight book - it’s an engaging story with people who got under my skin. Although this book features some of the same characters as ‘Lost for Words’, including Loveday as a viewpoint character, it stands alone. On the whole I found this book to be an uplifting read but there were times I had to put it down and take a moment, thanks to a couple of heart-shattering moments. It's really interesting to think of the role that books had in the pandemic to help people to cope and certainly I find that that's still true now. However this just left many underdeveloped characters, when she had written compelling main protagonists to begin with.

I loved the concept of getting books as part of mental health and how they can help us through rough times. Though at times this was a bit real and hard to read about Covid pandemic times again, this was such a gorgeous read. Het voelde enorm warm aan om te lezen over de boekenwinkel, en de vreugde die een boek teweeg kan brengen bij mensen. I'd recommend this book to book lovers as it contains lots of book recommendations within it and I've written quite a few down. I was surprised at the number of books I’d already read, but even more delighted with the number of books I haven’t even heard of.It is a heartwarming, eye-opening, moving testament to hope and the powerful influence a small group of people can have on the lives they touch. These vignettes truly capture the tone of 2020 with loneliness, fear and grief being juxtaposed with community, joy and love. I rarely get emotional reading but this book is so beautifully poignant and touching, speaking if a time when the world stopped, how we all feared how it would end and did the best we could for ourselves and those we love, a gentle hug of a story. Yes, this novel is set during the first few months of the Covid pandemic, but don't let that stop you from reading it, especially if you enjoyed the first in the series as much as I did.

The author provides the list of recommended books and "Questions for Book-sharers" at the end of the novel. It made me laugh, it made me cry and left me with a feeling of community spirit - I will definitely be recommending this to others, it is a fantastic read' ? It also brought into sharp clarity the ease with which it is possible to put someone in danger, quite unintentionally, because of naivety on our part.

As a book lover, nothing makes me happier than reading about people discovering books and finding joy and solace within the pages of books. This lady Rosemary and her husband George are retired, reclusive now due to the circumstances of the world and reading to each other in their garden is a joy. But, these lockdowns were so different to the way my own country, New Zealand, experienced lockdowns that they didn't even seem like lockdowns. I think a part of this was because the story is driven far more by the characters than by the plot and I'd be hard-pressed to define exactly what the plot is.
