About this deal

That's a big setback next to the HD Collection, which runs at 60fps on older 360 and PS3 hardware - and even on PS2, MGS2 was built to run at 60fps.

And to sweeten the deal, there's the MSX2 releases of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, while both NES Metal Gears make a rare appearance too for a series collection. The original 1998 Metal Gear Solid plays via emulation in the Master Collection release, with the same 240p resolution and 30fps cap.So much more could have been done — even just on the purely resolution and frame rate end — to make these three classics shine once more. the review itself was very poorly constructed and focused more on the presentation of the games in the menu than the games themselves! a modder has already patched the collection so that it runs the games at 1080p and even 4k (with old textures of course) but that is a steep improvement over what konami released! One more straightforwardly positive change I noticed is that the delay on codec dialogue in MGS2 has been reduced compared to the 2011 HD Collection.

Hardware clock speeds are simulated too, meaning we get an authentic 30fps cap with hard drops to 20fps and under, normally in the first-person view. If they had shown these games some respect and remasterd them instead of these blatant lazy cash ins i'd be all over them.It feels like a release put together with a pritt stick rather than super glue, with content spilling out into other apps when really it could have all been housed under one roof. Alongside them is a bevvy of bonus content taken from the Substance and Subsistence re-releases on PS2, as well as extra material like digital comics, soundtracks, and screenplays. For Switch and its Tegra X1 chipset, there's clearly a bottleneck to getting either game running at 60fps, but the problems don't end there.

Volume 1 line-up features the original titles and beginning of the METAL GEAR series: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (Including VR Missions/Special Missions), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version), and much more bonus content! Running at 4K with 16x anisotropic filtering completely fulfils the expectations I had of not just a PC release, but PS5 and Series X. However anti-aliasing and texture filtering are missing in MGS2 on Switch - and are lacking on Series X as well. It's worth stressing that the best way to play this is in selecting the English US version from the menus, which gets you a higher max frame-rate than the default English UK option.

Meanwhile the Playstation 2 duo - MGS2 and 3 - use code from the 2011 Bluepoint HD Collection versions for Xbox 360 and PS3. also, since we are evaluating this collection in 2023 and 12 years have gone by since the original mgs hd collection on ps3, people have the right to be more critical of this package. Those who purchase Volume 1 will also have access to a variety of bonus content including the two regional versions of Metal Gear, the original version of Snake's Revenge, the first and second Digital Graphic Novels in video form, and a digital soundtrack. At 30fps with unresponsive, heavy controls, it feels a lot more dated compared to the rest of the package. This 30fps cap on Switch has a domino effect on the game's motion blur effect, too, causing more notable banding behind camera movement. There are omissions of course, but it would have been enough if each game had been ported to current-gen consoles with the love and attention they deserve - but sadly, this isn't the reality.
