About this deal

These are robust interfaces. They sit solidly on your desk and exude a sort of professional calm. They are weighty, serious and look far cooler than their predecessors. While they don’t bring anything particularly new or innovative to the table, the sound quality is exemplary, and the feature set brings them in line with our modern needs for streaming and podcasting. Only the iD14 MkII has had any physical upgrades with the dual headphone output, an extra pair of outputs and the ability to be fully bus‑powered. Otherwise, the performance improvements are internal, although you shouldn’t underestimate the positive impact of the cool new look. The older iD44 and iD22 do now look rather drab and dated in comparison. Designed to replicate the input stage of a classic valve amplifier, iD4’s harmonically rich JFET Instrument Input is the perfect sonic foundation for your guitar or bass. Experience ultra low latency - Monitor Mix Most interfaces are class-compliant, so will work out of the box –just plug them in and start using them straight away. Some come with extra software you will need to access some of their more detailed functions and routing. Many, especially mobile interfaces, are bus-powered so you don't have to plug a mains power supply into them. The same headphone amplifier design was also used in the smaller EVO 4 and EVO 8 interfaces as well, meaning whether you are using the iD range for recording music and mixing or using an EVO for streaming and podcasting, you’re still getting the same high-performance headphone quality. SSL 12 is a 12-in/8-out interface, with four XLR combo mic/line inputs with high gain ‘SSL-designed’ mic preamps (including a +48v option for using condenser mics). Two inputs at the front can be poached for recording hi-Z instruments like guitars, bass, or vintage instruments. You get four balanced outputs and two sets of headphone outs. The extra eight inputs come by way of an ADAT connection.

The preamp sounds extraordinary, and I have to admit that the overall recording quality is better than the one of the Scarlett 2i2. Bundled with a free suite of creative software including Cubase LE and Cubasis LE for iOS, alongside industry leading plugins and virtual instruments, you can start recording as soon as you open the box. SpecificationsThe iD4 has a couple of unique (to me at any rate) aspects to its operation. The Monitor Mix control is one such, not only blending input and DAW return signals, but also switching the LED ladders to display input levels when you’re listening to 100 percent input. There’s also a Monitor Pan function, accessed by pressing the illuminated Mute and iD push-buttons simultaneously, and controlled by the Volume encoder, which allows you to create a stereo mix of the input signals. Pressing the iD button turns the Volume encoder into a mouse scroll wheel. Pushing the volume encoder dims the speaker output by 15dB, and causes the Mute switch to flash so that you know you’ve done it. The ADAT ports let you expand the total number of inputs and outputs by 16 (20 x in, 24 x out, hence 44) but part of us wishes there was more onboard analogue I/O. Still, at least there’s the provision for sizable expansion. Designed to deliver true phantom power over USB, iD4 will make sure your mics get the power they need to ensure optimal sonic performance. iOS Compatible iD4’s converters make sure you hear every nuance, every detail of your audio, letting you hear your mix more accurately. Work faster, make better creative decisions and experience professional audio performance from your desktop. Powerful Performance - Dual Headphone Outputs To get the best quality in such a small portable interface, we use a Class-AB amplifier design. If you’re not familiar with these classes, basically Class-AB combines the super low distortion audio of a Class-A design and the efficiency of a Class B design meaning we can get high-quality audio in a portable device that runs on USB power alone and doesn’t require a bulky power supply.

With only the two inputs, the Audient iD4 is pretty minimal, but it covers the needs of many musicians whether electronic or acoustic and, as it’s small and buss powered, it can be taken on the road for any travelling songwriters who want to work on the go.The 3 rd generation of the Scarlett series got a couple upgrades when compared to the 2 nd gen, which are: The appeal of larger and more comprehensive audio interfaces can be alluring, but for many, being able to record a single vocal, or a vocal and guitar, is all that is ever needed. While digital interfacing, such as S/PDIF and ADAT are commonly added to increase the I/O numbers on devices, but rarely ever used. Clarett is Focusrite’s premium USB range with three models and a decent bundle of software including Focusrite’s Red 2 and Red 3 plugins and Plugin Alliance’s bx_console Focusrite SC. Clarett+ focuses on improving audio performance rather than expanding that feature set. Komplete Audio 2 is a two-input, two-output design with two identical mic/line/instrument inputs. Connections are on space-saving combi XLRs with individual selector switches to select between line and instrument. 48V phantom power, meanwhile, is engaged globally via a single switch.

No need to find a power outlet as iD4 is powered directly from your computer via USB, without compromising on sound quality or performance. Get the most from your mics - True Phantom Power The iD14 (MKII)’s headphone amplifier is just part of what is an incredibly powerful and professional audio interface. Including two Audient Console mic-pres, class-leading AD/DA converters, 4 line outputs and much more – all for roughly the same cost as a standalone audiophile headphone amplifier. This makes for a very efficient and portable setup as opposed to separate preamps and headphone amps, possibly all requiring their own power supply. We think the one-dial solution is beautifully implemented and overall the design makes both the EVO 4 and 8 clever, compact desktop solutions that sound great. These are great value too, the simplest and cleverest solutions to compact audio interfaces we’ve come across. To understand latency in audio systems today we are going to use the analogy of the postal system (snail mail!). Let’s first imagine the ideal situation: When recording using a computer, one thing you’ll want to understand is Latency and how it can affect your sessions. Modern computers are wonders of technology and can process audio at incredibly fast speeds. In our experience, Focusrite’s Scarlett USB interfaces have traditionally combined excellent sonics and audio flexibility at affordable price points, and the third-generation units keep up the good work.
