About this deal

Wait for the rich, fat-free juices to settle to the bottom while the fat rises to the top… then remove the stopper from the spout and pour the good juices into your pan, ready to finish off your delicious gravy. There are a few different styles of fat separators. A classic version is a simple skimming spoon that collects fat as you run it over the top of the gravy. Modern models have a few different styles as well. The bottom-spout or pitcher fat separator looks a bit like a teapot and pours like one too, though the spout is attached lower to the container. There are also bottom-drain fat separators, which use a button to lift a plug at the bottom of the container to serve the gravy, sauce, or juices inside. Once you’ve poured your drippings in, you again need to wait a minute or two for the fat to separate from the juices. Cooking is as much an art as it is science. Fat doesn’t mix well with oils and juices. Over time, fat will naturally rise to the top of your gravy, leaving the tasty juices at the bottom. While you can certainly skim the fat off the top, it’s a tedious method. Fat separators do all the hard work for you. Once the two have separated, simply pour from the bottom spout (or release the bottom plug) and you’ll serve delicious gravy while the fat stays at the top.

You need to keep a careful eye on how low the fat level is getting. It is liable to fall out of the hole if you’re not watching it. What to Look for in a Fat Separator When you’ve got those two distinct layers, you place the separator over the bowl or pan you want the juice to end up in. These separators will have a switch or button on the handle that opens the plug and allows juices to flow out of the bottom. A delicious gravy is an essential part of any Sunday lunch, and the OXO Good Grips Fat Separator Jug lets you make the most of all those rich roasting pan juices, separating off the fat to make it much healthier and tastier. If the hole isn’t plugged up, you’re going to end up with drippings all over your countertop, fat and all! When you’re ready to pour, remove the strainer lid. If you leave it in, it may fall out during the pour. Also, any bits of meat or seasoning caught in the strainer will end up tipping into your bowl or pan. You’ll also want to make sure that the handle is strong and comfortable. Look for a separator that has a rubberized handle for ultimate grip and comfort. Again, before you pour any drippings, make sure that the strainer lid is on top of the jug. This will keep your juices liquid only. Fat separators are designed to do the hard work for you, but it's essential to choose a fat separator made from quality material that is easy to use and clean. Most fat separators are made of plastic, but some are made of glass or stainless steel, which some cooks may prefer for their durability and high heat tolerance. We considered fat separators that feature a pour spout and stopper that keeps the fat from traveling upward as well as those that offer a bottom-release feature that drains your liquid at the push of a button. We found the OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat Separator to be the best overall. This easy-to-use bottom-draining fat separator has a convenient pour spout and is dishwasher-safe.

You can now pour the lean juices into your bowl or pan ready for use! Be aware that some fat may begin to make its way up the spout towards the end of the pour. When this happens, stop pouring. Using a Bottom Opening Separator Potters Cookshop is not liable for lost, damaged or stolen parcels if a 'safe space' is specified without a signature being obtained. By stating a safe place customers are therefore taking responsibility prior to receipt. The bottom-feed separators tend to be better because they reduce the risk of fat mixing with the juices. With a large, 1 litre capacity, and markings on the side, this smart jug has an easy-grip handle and is dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean up when you’re finished. The removable strainer lid even has a convenient little holder to keep the stopper safe when it’s not in use. When it’s not being used for separating fat, you can use this as a standard measuring cup, for heating water in the microwave, or perhaps even for making tea. This is dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning. Firstly, the spout originates from the lower portion of the jug instead of the top. This is because the fat rises to the top of the jug as it’s lighter than the juices.

Ask yourself what you’re going to be using your fat separator for. If you’re cooking for just a few people, you can get by with a smaller fat separator–one that maybe holds two cups. For large gatherings, however, you may require a bigger container. Four cups is a popular size, though fat separators can go upwards of eight cups. A fat separatorwill have a high wall facing the spout. This stops any fat from pouring over the top.

A strainer is built in the lid to catch solid bits of food and the cup has easy-to-read measurement markings. This separator is dishwasher-safe for convenient cleaning. Modelled on our original fat separating jug, which was hugely popular with loads of health-conscious cooks, this version of our Gravy Skimmer Jug is made from robust Tritan, which can resist a higher heat than the previous model. And we’ve listened to the other customer concern too, and added a strainer lid to stop lumps getting into your gravy and keep the spout flowing freely. Pour your hot roasting pan juices into the jug and the strainer shield lid will catch any bits of food; as you wait, the fat will separate and rise to the top then – and here’s the clever part – a squeeze of the trigger handle will dispense all the good stuff from the bottom of the jug into a pan below, leaving any fat behind. So you get to make yummy gravy with far less fat, fewer calories and all of the flavour. Winner winner, roast dinner! The design is similar to other spout-style fat separators but with a slim, graceful spout and loop handle that makes it look modern and elegant. It has measurements in both US and metric, making it easy to know how much gravy you have. A stainless steel strainer filters out the large bits, and there is a finer strainer included to remove fine bits and sediment, so there’s no need for a second strainer. The plastic measuring cup style fat separator includes measurement markings in ounces and milliliters so you can see how much liquid you have remaining after the fat is removed. The OXO Good Grips Fat Separator is easy to clean, and all parts are dishwasher safe.
